For those attending a university, the end of a semester is a time of much rejoicing. During my last semesters at such an institution, I took place in an end-of-year celebratory tradition involving a ridiculous sandwich.

In some issue of Maxim (November 2005?) there was an article featuring absurd sandwich-based foods. So ridiculous were these edibles that some fraternity brothers of mine decided that the consumption of one such sandwich would make a fitting end-of-semester celebration.

I was unable to find the original article online, but found the ingredients here. I post them here for posterity.

The Dirty Mother

"Use two slices of buttery Texas toast as bookends, and slap together a sausage patty, hash browns, and three generous chops of ham, separating each layer with a slice of cheddar cheese. Throw two fried eggs in the mix, and comfort them with four strips of crispy bacon. A splash of ketchup or Worcestershire sauce is your choice, but tons of S&P is mandatory."

We would usually go to IHOP, order the ingredients individually, and assemble the sandwiches ourselves. The braver souls in the group would purchase fries as a side dish.

These memories are making me hungry.

A week ago, I used up a stretch of vacation time to indulge in a week of personal productivity (and video gaming). During this stretch of time (from one Saturday to the next Sunday) I managed to sleep one less times than there were nights.

That is to say, I did not sleep when it was dark – I slept when I felt tired enough to do so. This happened to occur less often than nighttime. To see a similar sleep schedule displayed in a handy timeline, check out this XKCD comic.

Over Christmas weekend (4 days), I tried the same thing – I fell asleep very late the evening of the first day, very early the morning of third day, and again the afternoon of the fourth day.

This is the end of that experiment – over 4 days, I have slept 3 times. As I go to work right now, I have already been awake for 8 hours. I will probably feel like sleeping not long after I leave work.

The odd sleep schedule has some benefits: it's not hard to fall asleep (because my bed time is defined by when I feel sleepy), and depending on my sleep patterns, there is the possibility of actually spending less time sleeping every week.

The abnormal waking hours definitely felt odd at times, though I feel that I started to get used to them a bit. I'm considering trying a similar schedule over the course of a work week some time. If I do, I will report back with my findings.

I hate the taste of coffee.

It's bitter (not in a good way, like beer) and unpleasant to my tastory senses.

However, it is difficult to beat coffee's efficiency as a vehicle for caffeine. I generally drink my coffee with several heaping doses of hot chocolate powder, but the burnt bean flavor still comes through.

That was then

I recently discovered espresso – a drink that focuses on distilling the essence of coffee (CAFFEINE) into as tiny a beverage as possible, and then filling up the rest of the cup with things that taste good.

Sweeeeeet.

I've been indulging pretty regularly lately. The stuff is expensive when you buy retail, but I have a friend who is mastering the art of Making Espresso That Doesn't Suck, and I intend to exploit him to the fullest extent possible.

Recently back from watching the Dark Knight, I feel as though I must tell someone about it. Internet, here I come!

I had a friend in college who would watch movies on a screen to his left while he played video games. If you went into his room, there was a good chance that one of two things would be showing to his left: one of the Lord of the Rings movies, or an episode of Angel.

If I had an extra screen in my room, you would probably find Futurama, Firefly, and a few other movies with high re-watchability showing continuously on my wall. It's not hard to imagine Dark Knight being added to that short list.

Christian Bale was, of course, buff and badass.

Whatever you may think about Heath Ledger, the sensationalism surrounding his death does not change the fact that he WAS the Joker. Phenomenal casting there.

It was an epic story, and it was very well told. Christopher Nolan has been added to my list of Storytellers To Watch For – a hard list to make in my ADD addled brain.

I don't regret making Dark Knight the movie that I'll spend my $8/year theater budget on.

It seems generally accepted that May 15th and June 15th are one month apart. But what happens when the following month does not have a date matching the current date?

June does not have a 31st day! Is it possible that a month from May 31st would actually be July 1st, skipping the month of June entirely?

Discuss.

I will not read any paragraph longer than ~100 words.

I will delete (or thumb down, depending on the context) any comment that scores a Disagreement Hierarchy rating of 0.

I will lower my opinion of any person who completely ignores proper capitalization in their post or comment.

This list to be updated as I further define my pickiness.

So I looked at the search strings people used to find my site. A good number of them were my name (hi, Mom). However, I did note that if you want random page hits, it seems to be worthwhile to reference some famous actors in conjunction with the word "boobs" in a post.

If you want some easy entertainment some day, go to GoDaddy and try entering random domain names to see what's available in the dot-com area.

Pretty much all the two/three word combinations that you would think of have been taken. But there's still some good stuff available, if you look hard enough!

IScareChildren.com is totally available, as is leethax0r.com (!). If you want to pick up the domain name flashydomainname.com, it's still available.

But if you were hoping to grab totally1337.com, or maybe awesomeblog.com, you're out of luck. Also worth noting: every combination of g + (any number of Os) + gle is taken.

Once you fully grasp how many domain names have already been taken, you get the urge to pick up the reasonable names that you might find available. After all, if it's only $9 a year to own the domain name with your given name in it… why not buy it, on the off chance that people who are interested in your life story will try visiting (yourname).com?

Not that I would, or anything.

I am taking 3 classes this semester that require me to spend time in a classroom. Two of them are standard business courses (ECON 211 – Macroeconomics and COMM 311 – Business Communication) and the other is a computer science course (CSCE 235 – Discrete Mathematics).

There is a marked difference between the two genres of class.

+ Everybody shows up for the computer science course. You see the same faces in class every day, because the students in that class know that you just have to go to class to do well. Attendance is spotty in the two business courses, and some of those who do show up are obviously not paying attention.

+ In computer science, you have homework to do. As soon as one is completed, another one is assigned – if not sooner! It *will* take you at least 4-6 hours to do, and it does force you to learn the material. The business classes have no homework to speak of – the worst out-of-classroom work has been some truly stupid group work in my communications class.

+ There are a lot more girls in the business classes. Seriously. There's only one girl in Discrete Mathematics.

Students in both classes complain about the same amount for their assigned workload, but the students in my computer science class have a lot more reason to complain. They're all computer science or computer engineering – I'm the only business major.
